Product/Research Description
The Department of Mathematics at the University of Strathclyde is renowned for its work in the modelling of liquid crystals and liquid crystal displays. The seminal work of Frank Leslie in the 60s provided a theoretical description of nematic liquid crystals which is used today to model the vast majority of liquid crystal displays. Recent work includes the modelling of smectic liquid crystal devices (FLCs), bistable displays, surface effects, defect formation and motion as well as optics modelling.
Specialised Skills and Facilities
The Department provides expert knowledge in most aspects of modelling liquid crystal devices and related anisotropic materials, both on collaborative research projects and on a consultancy basis.
The Department currentlt collaborates with a number of UK and Global Display companies.
